Messaging:
There’s a nostalgia for cuffing-season. It’s a kind of romantic tension that carried through the festivities and into the new year. There’s a slow pace to it, and that pace is slow in all of your relationships right now. You find yourself traveling long distances for love, or at least wanting to do that. The nostalgia is coming from a time when people made connections offline. Meeting strangers in curious, or familiar, places is a dream of yours. You want to put yourself in stranger places to see who might strike a conversation. You’re also curious about hometown connections. You’re wondering what old fling might give you a new hickey.
Love isn’t for the weak. You want to fuck up your life a bit, or change it in a way that seems drastic. This person—if you’re thinking about a potential lover—they remind you of an unattainable and dreamy high school crush. You’re heart is longing to be chosen first. You’re up against feeling like these relationships you enter are only sexy escapades.
You’re caught up in contemplation. You’re wondering: Where do I belong? Will being with someone feel like belonging? Am I ready for real love? How will love change me? How am I fulfilled? How do I release? How do I prefer romance? Imagining love at this stage shows maturity and a readiness for the potential of it coming into your life. Trauma, the past, tells your brain another story, though. You’re still allowed to cry.
On the crying—you’re shedding old versions of yourself while you grieve. You’ve sacrificed so much to get to this version, which is good enough for you right now. You like this! Change is inevitable, and so are growing pains. You’re reaching for protection. Don’t use protection to safe-guard from love, in any form love might take. Sometimes love cuts like a blade. Truths are revealed. The journey is still up to you, so you get to decide what to invite in and protect from. Make note of it.
Falling in love will be so easy, though. Remember the slowness of winter. Maybe this time is not like the rest. Especially to those who are in long-term relationships already, you know this and something else is eating at you in terms of the romance of your situation. Go to a movie. Relax. Snuggle. Give gifts often, to yourself and to your lover. Put on smooth jazz while you cook dinner together.
